What is the difference between a replacement ink pad and a replacement plate for my self inking stamp?

The ink pad is the pad housed in a removable plastic cartridge in the stamp that is inked and delivers the ink to the die plate as you press down to complete the stamping process. The plate is a piece of special rubber attached to the bottom of your stampers that is molded with your custom imprint.

You would need a replacement ink pad if your pad is no longer viable or you wish to change ink colors. When you replace the pad, you take out the entire plastic cartridge and replace it with a new one. The cartridge includes the ink pad. You do not take the pad out of the plastic cartridge as it is all one piece as shown below.

You would need a new replacement plate if the text and/or graphics are worn out and do not stamp well anymore, or if the custom imprint information is no longer valid such as you need to change the address or other text on the stamp.

Can I reink the pad I have instead of replacing the ink pad?

If the pad is hard to the touch, crusty, has deep impression marks in the pad, or has dried out, it is best to replace the ink pad with a new one. However, if the ink pad is still soft and viable but has run out of enough ink to produce a good impression, you probably just need to re-ink the existing pad.

What is a replacement plate?
